Game Review
The Melbourne Cricket Ground was the stage for an absolute thriller in Round 9 of the 2024 season, as the Carlton Blues edged out the Melbourne Demons by a single point, 77 to 76. The atmosphere was electric, and the game delivered on every front, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the final siren. The first quarter was all about the Blues, who came out of the blocks firing and left the Demons struggling to keep up. Carlton's Sam Walsh set the tone with an early goal at the 6-minute mark, followed by a flurry of goals from Marc Pittonet, Jack Martin, Harry McKay, and Tom De Koning. By the end of the first quarter, Carlton had a commanding 30-0 lead, with Melbourne yet to score. The second quarter saw the Demons trying to claw their way back into the game. Christian Petracca finally got Melbourne on the scoreboard with a goal at the 11-minute mark, and he followed it up with another goal four minutes later. Despite their efforts, the Blues continued to dominate, with goals from Matthew Owies, Patrick Cripps, and another from Owies extending their lead. By halftime, Carlton was ahead 50-19, but Melbourne showed signs of life. The third quarter was a more balanced affair. Carlton's Charlie Curnow kicked things off with a goal in the first minute, but Melbourne responded quickly with a goal from Kysaiah Pickett. The Demons began to find their rhythm, with Petracca and Bayley Fritsch adding to their tally. However, the Blues managed to maintain their lead, thanks to goals from Owies and Curnow. As the quarter ended, Carlton led 70-48, but Melbourne was gaining momentum. The final quarter was a nail-biter. Carlton's George Hewett scored an early goal, but Melbourne refused to go quietly.
