Matthew Owies, a versatile athlete with a background in both Australian rules football and basketball, currently showcases his skills as a forward for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Hailing from Melbourne, Owies initially excelled in junior football with the Camberwell Sharks and represented his school, St Kevin's, on the football field. However, his talent was not limited to football, as he also displayed prowess in basketball. At the age of 15, Owies made a pivotal decision to shift his primary focus to basketball. His journey in basketball saw him represent Australia at the 2014 FIBA Under-17 World Championship and play for the Dandenong Rangers in the South East Australian Basketball League. This success led him to receive a scholarship to play NCAA men's basketball for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, where he made significant contributions as a point guard. Despite his achievements in basketball, Owies decided to return to Australia and pursue a career in football. In 2018, he joined the Carlton Football Club as a Category B rookie. After dedicated development as a small marking forward, Owies made his senior AFL debut in 2020, marking a significant milestone in his football career. His perseverance and hard work paid off as he solidified his position in the Carlton forward-line in the following years.
