Born on July 21, 1988, Hawkins has made a significant impact in the league with his towering height of 197 cm (6 ft 6 in) and robust build weighing 105 kg (231 lb). Hawkins' football journey began in New South Wales before he transitioned to Victoria to attend Melbourne Grammar School. His talent on the field quickly rose to prominence, earning him a place in the first XVIII during his tenth year. Playing for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup and representing Vic Metro in the AFL Under-18 Championships, Hawkins garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Larke Medal for being the most valuable player in the AFL Under-18 Championships and securing a spot in the All-Australian team.
