Greater Western Sydney Giants
Tom Downie, a towering ruckman standing at an impressive 203 centimeters (6 ft 8 in), made his mark in the Australian Football League (AFL) as a former professional player for the Greater Western Sydney Giants. Born on 27 April 1993, Downie was recruited by the Giants in the 2011 national draft as the 56th overall pick. His AFL debut came in round 20 of the 2013 season when he faced Fremantle at Subiaco Oval. Throughout his career, Downie showcased his skills in a total of nine AFL games, with one game in 2013, seven in 2015, and one in 2016. Despite his promising talent on the field, Downie decided to retire from professional football in May 2017 to focus on addressing his mental health concerns. Originally hailing from the North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup, Downie's presence on the field was characterized by his commanding height and strategic plays as a ruckman. During his tenure with the Greater Western Sydney Giants from 2012 to 2017, Downie left a lasting impact on the team and the AFL community.
