Born on 19 March 1986, Murphy's football journey began when he was selected as the 21st pick in the 2004 AFL Draft. Murphy's career saw him excel as a defender, showcasing his skills and dedication to the game. He started with the Box Hill Hawks in the Victorian Football League before making his debut with Hawthorn in 2005. Throughout his career, Murphy displayed versatility, playing in various positions to support his team, even stepping up as a full back when needed due to injuries.
