Standing at an impressive height of 197 cm (6 ft 6 in) and weighing 93 kg (205 lb), Gardner is a versatile player known for his skills as both a forward and a defender. Gardner's journey in the Australian Football League (AFL) began when he was drafted by Geelong at pick 59 in the 2015 AFL draft. Despite not having played a senior game, Gardner's determination and hard work led him to be recruited by the Western Bulldogs in the 2019 mid-season rookie draft. He made his debut for the Bulldogs on 2 June 2019, showcasing his talent on the field.
