Ryan Abbott - Player Bio
Ryan Abbott, a former professional Australian rules footballer, boasts an impressive career that saw him play for both Geelong and St Kilda in the Australian Football League (AFL). Hailing from Grovedale, Victoria, Abbott's journey to the AFL was marked by dedication and talent. Before transitioning to Australian rules football, Abbott honed his skills in basketball from the age of 14 until he was 21. However, it was on the football field where he truly shone. Playing for the Grovedale Tigers in the Geelong Football League, Abbott clinched consecutive best and fairest awards, showcasing his exceptional abilities early on. Abbott's prowess didn't go unnoticed, leading him to join Geelong's Victorian Football League (VFL) team. His standout performances, including a notable duel against AFL-listed ruckman Jake Spencer, caught the eye of Geelong, who drafted him with pick 69 in the 2016 national draft. Despite facing setbacks like a leg fracture and a subsequent stress fracture in his back, Abbott displayed resilience and determination. This resilience paid off when he made his AFL debut for Geelong in round 20 of the 2018 season, facing off against Richmond at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. Following his time at Geelong, Abbott continued his AFL journey with St Kilda, showcasing his skills in one game for the club during the 2020 season. While his time in the AFL may have been brief, Abbott's contributions to both Geelong and St Kilda left a lasting impression on fans and teammates alike.
