Hailing from Albany, Western Australia, Gardiner began his football journey with the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) before making a significant leap to the AFL. In the 1996 National Draft, Gardiner was selected as the number-one pick by the West Coast Eagles, marking the commencement of an illustrious career. He debuted for the Eagles in 1997 and swiftly established himself as the team's primary ruckman, showcasing exceptional skills and athleticism on the field. Gardiner's standout performances culminated in his inclusion in the prestigious All-Australian team in 2003, a testament to his talent and dedication to the sport.
