Martin Mattner - Player Bio
Martin Mattner, a former Australian rules footballer, showcased his talent and dedication during his career with the Sydney Swans and Adelaide Crows in the Australian Football League (AFL). Hailing from the small town of Ki Ki, located 150 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, Mattner's journey to AFL success was filled with hard work and perseverance. Elevated off Adelaide's rookie list in 2002, Mattner had to make the grueling trek to Adelaide twice a week to train and play for Sturt. Despite the challenges, he excelled on the field, becoming Adelaide's leading tackler in the 2005 and 2006 seasons. However, a calf injury sidelined him for two games during the 2006 season, showcasing the physical demands of professional football. In a bittersweet moment, Mattner retired during the 2013 AFL season due to a persistent hip injury. Transitioning into coaching, he joined the Sydney Swans as a development coach until the conclusion of the 2015 season. Subsequently, in October 2015, Mattner took on the role of head coach at Sturt, where he left an indelible mark by winning a SANFL Premiership both as a player and a coach. With a unique achievement under his belt, being one of the rare individuals to secure SANFL and AFL Premierships as a player and coach, Martin Mattner's legacy in Australian football is one of resilience, skill, and leadership.
