Justin Clarke, a former professional Australian rules footballer, left a lasting impact during his time with the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL) from 2012 to 2016. Hailing from the quaint town of Booleroo Centre in South Australia, Clarke's journey to the AFL was one of resilience and determination. Despite his early passion for aviation, Clarke's dream of joining the Air Force was dashed due to his towering height. Undeterred, he pursued his academic endeavors, achieving an impressive ATAR of 99.95 upon completing high school. Clarke's football career took off when he was recruited from the Booleroo Centre/Melrose/Wilmington (BMW) Lions in the Northern Areas Football Association (NAFA) as the 4th selection in the 2012 Rookie draft. He quickly established himself as a key player in the Brisbane Lions' backline, showcasing his defensive prowess and consistency on the field. Tragically, Clarke announced his retirement in 2016 following a severe concussion sustained during a preseason training session. Despite medical advice to steer clear of contact sports, Clarke channeled his energy into advocacy work for the Queensland Brain Institute and coaching responsibilities with the QAFL team Western Magpies. A testament to his intellectual acumen, Clarke graduated from The University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. His academic excellence culminated in being selected as a Rhodes Scholar for 2021, where he will pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Science at Oxford University.
