Hale, born on 22 May 1984, hails from Hobart, Tasmania, and started his football journey with the Broadbeach Football Club in Queensland before being selected as the 7th pick in the 2001 national draft. Standing tall at 201 cm (6 ft 7 in) and weighing 104 kg (229 lb), David Hale made his debut in Round 5 of the 2003 season for North Melbourne against Carlton at the Telstra Dome. Throughout his career, he showcased his versatility by playing as a Forward and Ruck for both the North Melbourne Football Club and the Hawthorn Football Club. From 2003 to 2010, Hale was a key player for the Kangaroos/North Melbourne before making a move to Hawthorn from 2011 to 2015.
