Kerr's talent was recognized early on when he was drafted by West Coast with the 18th pick in the 2000 National Draft. Throughout his career, Kerr showcased his skills and was honored with various accolades. He was the runner-up in the 2001 AFL Rising Star award and claimed the Goal of the Year in 2003 at the young age of 20. Kerr's impressive performances saw him finish in the top three of the Brownlow Medal for three consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2007, narrowly missing out on the prestigious award in 2005 to his teammate Ben Cousins by a single vote.
