Dawes, born on May 16, 1988, in Victoria, started his career with the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup and the Hampton Rovers in the VAFA. He was drafted at No. 28 in the 2006 National Draft and made his debut in Round 19 of the 2008 season for Collingwood against St Kilda at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
