Ashley McGrath - Player Bio
Ashley Vernon McGrath, known as Ash or Boonj, is a former Indigenous Australian rules footballer who left a lasting mark on the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League. Born on May 20, 1983, in Northam, Western Australia, McGrath was a force to be reckoned with on the field. Selected as the thirteenth pick overall in the 2000 AFL Draft, McGrath quickly made his mark with the Brisbane Lions. He debuted in late 2001 and became a regular member of the team, contributing significantly to the Lions' third consecutive AFL premiership in 2003. Throughout his career, McGrath showcased his versatility by playing in various positions. In 2005, he seized the opportunity to shine as a forward following the retirement of key players. Despite facing challenges in the 2009 season, McGrath bounced back after the mid-season break, delivering a standout performance with 30 disposals against Geelong. McGrath's exceptional skills and dedication did not go unnoticed, as he was selected to represent the Australia international rules football team in 2013. His memorable 200th AFL game, where he scored a winning goal against Geelong after the siren, solidified his legacy in the sport. After an illustrious career spanning from 2001 to 2014, McGrath announced his retirement on August 21, 2014, as the last remaining player from the Brisbane Lions' triple premiership-winning sides. His contributions to the team and the sport as a whole will always be remembered by fans and fellow players alike.
